The Dark History of Portland’s Freeways

During the 1950s the development of freeways across the country became a huge thing and a representation of a city moving into the future. The city of Portland felt the need to jump into this “fad” as urban renewal was exploding in the city. In the following years we saw the developments of Interstates 5, 84, 205 and 405 (the state’s only four freeways). However, for all the progress felt in the city with these developments, there’s a dark history behind Portland’s total embracement of freeway development, a darkness that included the stealing of private property, demolition of hundreds of homes, questionable construction, and clear representations of racism and separations based on class. I bring that history to you here in this video.
